Take the guesswork out of a dropped-off meal

Type up a label, print it, and tape it to the lid. The family learns what it is, how to heat it, what is in it, and who to thank, without texting anyone to ask.

Why the label matters as much as the meal

The meal usually arrives while nobody is ready for it. The family is at an appointment, or asleep, or holding it together by a thread on the other side of the door. Hours later someone opens the fridge and finds a foil pan.

Is it already cooked? Does it go in the oven or the microwave? Is there dairy in it, and does that matter for the kid with the allergy? Is the sauce meant to go on top or on the side? Whose dish is this, and do we have to wash it and give it back?

None of those questions are hard. They are just unanswered, and every unanswered question costs a family energy they do not have right now. A label answers all of them in about ten seconds of reading, and it takes you two minutes to write.

Six things worth writing down

What it is

Name the dish the way you would say it out loud. "Chicken and wild rice casserole" beats "casserole."

How to heat it

Oven or microwave, the temperature, and the number of minutes. Say so plainly if it is meant to be eaten cold.

How to keep it

Counter tonight, fridge for three days, or straight to the freezer, plus the date to eat it by.

What is in it

Allergens first, then the ingredient list. A family managing an allergy should never have to guess.

What you changed

"I left the hot sauce out for you." "Cheese is in the small container so you can skip it."

Who it is from

Your name and number, and whether the dish needs to come back or can go in the recycling.

Fill it in, then print

Everything you type appears on the label as you go. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Blank lines print as blank lines, so you can fill the rest in by hand at the door.

Getting it onto the food

  • Print on plain paper and tape the label to the lid, or slide it into a sandwich bag first so a spill does not make it unreadable.
  • One label per container. If the sauce travels separately, the sauce gets its own label.
  • Write the heating time for a cold dish out of the fridge, not a dish straight from your oven. The family is reheating it tomorrow, not eating it tonight.
  • If the dish goes in the freezer, put the date on it. In three weeks nobody will remember.
  • Keep a few blank ones printed in the car. You will use them again.

A label helps once. A meal train helps for months.
